Colosseum dress code

Unlike the Vatican, the Colosseum itself does not have a strict dress code, there are practical recommendations to make the most of your visit. Here are some tips for dressing appropriately.

The Colosseum Dress Code

As mentioned the Colosseum does not have a dress code. However, it is important to note that you cannot enter in any form of fancy dress or with any fancy dress items such as gladiator swords or shields.

We always recommend wearing comfortable shoes no matter what the season as there are many steps involved especially if you are visiting the Palatine hill and Roman forum afterward (these are included in the ticket price).

In terms of clothing, it’s best to wear suitable attire for the season, during summer months temperatures can become extremely hot, additionally, most of the archeological park is outside so we highly recommend wearing or bringing a hat.

What items can you take inside?

      1. Bag Restrictions: Visitors are allowed to bring small backpacks into the Colosseum. However, entry with large backpacks is strictly forbidden. It is advisable to travel light and carry only the essentials to facilitate your exploration of the site.

      1. Prohibited Items: For the safety and security of all visitors, certain items are strictly prohibited within the Colosseum. These include weapons, knives, explosive objects, and fireworks. Additionally, deodorant sprays are not permitted. It is important to leave these items at your accommodation or in a secure location before your visit.

      1. Bottle Policy: You are not allowed to enter the Colosseum with full glass or plastic bottles. However, there is no need to dispose of your water bottle entirely. Instead, it is recommended to empty or finish your bottle of water before entering the Colosseum. You can then refill it at one of the many water fountains, known as “nasoni,” located within the Colosseum or the Roman Forum. This way, you can stay hydrated during your visit without violating the bottle policy.

    Conclusion

As noted there is no strict dress code for the Colosseum, however, we do recommend dressing appropriately for the season. In addition you should take care to not take any large bags or prohibited items as mentioned above.
